ITP Students Helping to Change the Wireless Industry

What started as a class project for TLEN5560 in the Fall of 2009 is resulting in trial deployments for several cellular telephone operators around the country.  In an effort to improve the ability to position cell phone users for both emergency calls and location based services, students from TLEN5560 carried out a series of experiments in which small CDMA pilot beacon transmitters were installed at various locations around the University of Colorado at Boulder campus.  These beacons provide additional reference points for use by the wireless network and user equipment.  Students installed the equipment, ran the experiments and processed the data.  Graduating students from the class have been offered positions with prominent employers in the wireless industry, including Qualcomm and Communication Technology Services, Inc.  These students had an opportunity to work with industry professionals that included manufacturers like Corning, GS Teletech Inc., and Cellular Specialties, Inc., and wireless network operators, including Verizon Wireless. “Graduates from this class have gained valuable skills with regard to cell phone positioning and CDMA network operation.” said Phil Ziegler of Verizon Wireless.  For more information about this and other ITP wireless classes at CU, contact Prof. Ken Baker.
