Seminar Substitute Students may, with advisor approval, substitute an alternative course for their second instance of seminar (TLEN 5600). The rationale is that for some students, especially students doing a thesis, a course that is tightly related to their interest will be more useful in their studies. There are two elements to applying a substitute. **** I. General Conditions: 1: Any student may choose to make a substitute. 2: The student must take one instance of seminar *before* taking the seminar substitute and receive an A- or A grade. 3: The substitute may not be double counted to fill any other requirement. 4. Substitute courses in ITP will be identified at the beginning of each semester. Students can petition to count courses in other departments that meet the criteria. Students should have substitutes as part of their approved degree plan. **** II. Substitute Course Criteria 1: At least 2 credits 2: Students read a significant number of resources such as papers, journals, government reports, etc. or; students hear a variety of speakers on topics related to a field. 3: Students write critiques of the speakers or papers. 4: There is a major writing component (at least one paper of 20 pages double-spaced length). updated: July 16, 2007
