The increasing wireless internet traffic necessitated the need to increase the data rate. This led to the evolution of wireless technologies from 1G to 4G.  In 2009, Sprint announced it would shift to 4G while Verizon and AT&T shift to LTE. This is just the beginning of wireless technologies reaching a maximum data rate of tens of gigabits.
