Advisory Board :: WildBlue Communications :: Thomas E. Moore

Thomas E. Moore

A technologist at heart and by training, Tom Moore has spent much of his career involved in the development of video, voice and data broadband technology for the satellite, wireless and cable television industries.  During the 1990's, Tom was instrumental in the creation of patented and patent pending technology supporting what is known as a DOCSIS® cable modem. This specification is now a global ITU standard with over 40 million modems deployed worldwide by manufacturers such as Motorola, Linksys, Cisco, Toshiba, Thompson, Scientific Atlanta, Samsung and Broadcom.

In 1998, Tom co-founded WildBlue Communications with the purpose of extending the DOCSIS® technology into the satellite world and thus making the benefits of broadband available to the 25-30 million homes that would not receive it otherwise.  WildBlue, a satellite based broadband service provider sponsored by industry leaders such as Liberty Media, Intelsat, NRTC, Kleiner Perkins, Northrop Grumman and Telesat/Bell Canada. is a facilities based direct-to-home small dish broadband Internet access platform targeted at consumers and small businesses that don't have access to alternative access technologies such as DSL and cable modem. The company raised over half a billion dollars, built and launched its own special purpose satellites and deployed a nationwide consumer service during Tom's tenure. Tom served as the President, CEO and Director of the company from 1998 until 2005, and continues his involvement today on the Board of Directors.

Prior to WildBlue, Tom was in senior management at Cable Television Laboratories (CableLabs) a non-profit technology development consortium of the cable industry. While there, in addition to DOCSIS® design and certification, Tom directed technical development in the areas of quality of service (QoS), traffic engineering, and support for enhanced services such as streaming media (audio/video), Packet Cable VoIP telephony, and interactive gaming across cable networks.

Tom holds a master's degree in business administration with distinction from Harvard Business School . He also holds a master's degree in telecommunications from the University of Colorado , where his research focused on broadband media access control protocols, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and video compression technology.

Tom's outside interests include cycling, running, golf, and coaching and playing hockey.
