- Create a CU Student E-mail Account and Identikey password:
University policy requires that all official communication be sent to the student's CU e-mail address. You can set up an e-mail account by contacting the ITS department (help@colorado.edu or (303) 492-4357) with your SID and PIN; they will activate your account and set a temporary password for you to change upon first log in. If you do not have this information you can call 303-492-6970 to get your PIN or bring a picture ID to the Registrar's office located in 105 Regent. Students are responsible for monitoring this e-mail address or for forwarding these e-mails to their preferred account.
The IdentiKey is created when you are accepted to the University. Instructions for activating your IdentiKey and setting your password can be found here: http://oit.colorado.edu/identikey-activate
- Obtain Student ID Card (on-campus students only):
BuffOne Cards can be obtained in room N180 at the Center for Community (C4C). This will be your main identification when you are accessing campus services, and it will also be your free RTD bus pass. See http://www.buffonecard.com/ or questions@buffonecard.com.
- Sign-up for ITP student e-mail distribution list:
All new students must register for the ITP student listserv in order to receive important program announcements. Please note that your CU email address is your official email address once you are enrolled.
- Choose Courses and draft a degree plan:
It is recommended that students starting their first semester select from a few of the courses listed below. TLEN 5300, Telecom Theory and Applications (3): For those that do not have a strong engineering or mathematics background, you should register for this course. TLEN 5300 does not count towards your degree but it will help you keep up with the technical courses that follow. With instructor's permission, TLEN 5300 can be taken in parallel with TLEN 5310.
TLEN 5310, Telecommunications Systems (3): All first semester students who are strong in mathematic fundamentals should enroll in this course. This course is a prerequisite for all other technical courses.
TLEN 5330, Data Communications (3): Most first semester students choose to take this course along with TLEN 5310.
TLEN 5010, Network Economics and Finance I (3): This course is a prerequisite for all of the social science courses offered as a part of the telecom program.
TLEN 5210, Principles of Telecom Policy (2): This course is a prerequisite for all law and policy courses offered as part of the telecom program.
TLEN 5600, Telecommunications Seminar (1): All students are required to take seminar to earn their degree.Choose from 2-3 of the courses above depending on your preference (and ability).
If you have an engineering background and feel that you are qualified, you might consider taking another course, such as Wireless and Cellular Communications (TLEN 5510) or IP Network Design (TLEN 5570). You can seek waiver of prerequisites directly from the instructor for these during the first week of classes.
**Although you might be tempted to meet with advisors after arriving on campus, DO NOT try and make an appointment with an advisor until after the student orientation, until AFTER you have attempted to make a degree plan on your own first, and until AFTER you have met with members and colleagues of the Telecom Students Association (TSO), where you can receive informal advice and suggestions from peers.**
- Confirm course selection with Elizabeth Golder, ITP Deputy Director:
E-mail ITP Deputy Director with a list of 1st semester courses. The ITP Deputy Director will lift the advising flag on your records in order for you to complete registration.
- Register for Classes:
See the Office of the Registrar calendar for registration dates and deadlines.
On-campus students You should have received an invitation to register if your application paperwork is complete. You may register for your courses through the student portal.
Distance students You register through CAETE by completing the registration form on their website (http://caete.colorado.edu/registration-tuition). If you have registration questions, please call 303-492-6331.
Distance courses are normally delivered via URL link, streaming over the Internet. Recorded live course lectures are usually available within 24 hours of the actual course taking place on-campus. As a distance student, you have on-demand access to those lectures for the entire semester. Distance students in live courses work at the same pace as on-campus students. Instructors are usually available through email, and other means you set up directly with the instructor. If your course requires an Education Officer (EO), who proctors your exams, you will need to submit contact information through the CAETE website.
- Writing Proficiency: The Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program has a 30+ year history of developing incoming students into multi-faceted professionals who are able to manage the intense and rapidly changing technology, business and policy environments that impact modern networks. Ensuring that our students have adequate writing skills is central to this effort. To that end, ITP requires all incoming students to complete an exam that is designed to assess their writing skills. The exam is given during the first week of the semester and is scored based on content, grammar, citation, and coherency.
Students have one opportunity to pass the exam by achieving the minimum grade of B. Each incoming student who does not achieve the minimum grade must complete a writing course offered on ITP’s behalf by the International English Center (IEC). This course has been specifically designed to meet the needs of ITP students. Students will be required to repeat the IEC writing course until they are able to attain the minimum grade of B. Demonstrating writing proficiency, either by passing the exam or the course, is a condition of graduation. However, the writing course does not count towards the degree requirements.
Details about the exam will be provided via email to all incoming students prior to the start of classes. The details will include where the exam will be held, what day and time the exam is given.
