Directors' Merit Fellowship:

All incoming applicants are eligible for this award, including international applicants. Merit Fellows receive up to $10,000 in the amount of $5,000 per semester for 2 semesters. The award will be automatically renewed for the second semester if all criteria are met. The fellow must take at least 9 credits each award semester and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5. Fellows must pass the writing exam by the beginning of the second semester. In their third semester, Director’s Merit Fellows in good standing will be offered a student assistant position of 12-20 hours per week. Student Assistant positions currently pay $16/hour.

We look for academic achievement, character, and leadership potential. All incoming students choosing to enroll in ITP who meet the qualifications below will receive the Directors' Merit Award:

• GRE Quantitative score: 730 or above
• GRE Verbal score: 630 or above
• GRE Analytical Writing: 5.0 or above
• Class Rank within the Top 10%
   

Telecommunications Management (TelMan) Fellowship:

All incoming domestic applicants are eligible for this award. ITP seeks future leaders in telecommunications management. TelMan Fellows receive up to $12,500 in the amount of $2,500 per semester for 5 semesters. The award will be automatically renewed in subsequent semesters if all criteria are met. The fellow must take at least 9 credits each award semester and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5. Fellows must pass the ITP writing exam by the beginning of the second semester. By the end of the third semester, they must complete at least 12 TLEN and 12 EMEN credits (24 credits total) toward the Interdisciplinary Telecommunications and Engineering Management dual degree: http://telecom.colorado.edu/degrees-certificates/certificates/me-engineering-mgmt-ms-telecom

We look for students who have at least three years work experience in the telecommunications industry. You must first apply and be accepted into ITP. Indicate in your statement of purpose that you are applying for the Telecommunications Management Fellowship. Describe why you are deserving of the award. Include at least one recommendation letter specifically for the TelMan Fellowship. Awards will be based on academic merit. Up to two awards will be offered each year.

Policy Leader Fellowship (PLF):

All incoming applicants are eligible for this award, including international applicants. ITP seeks leaders in policy positions to study here. Policy Fellows receive up to $10,000 in the amount of $5,000 per semester for 2 semesters. The award will be automatically renewed for the second semester if all criteria are met. The student must take at least 9 credits each award semester and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 as well as pursue a concentration of policy-related courses. Students must pass the writing exam by the beginning of the second semester. As part of the program, the Policy Fellow will work with the internationally known Silicon Flatirons Center during their first year; supporting that program and taking part in its conferences (see www.silicon-flatirons.org). In their third semester, Policy Leader Fellows in good standing will be offered a student assistant position of 12-20 hours a week with Silicon Flatirons. (Student Assistant positions currently pay $16/hour.) As part of the experience, fellows will be invited to join small group gatherings with distinguished guests and take part in cutting edge policy discussions. Past guests at Silicon Flatirons programs have included Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell, Federal Trade Commission Chairman Bill Kovacic and the Chairman of India's Knowledge Commission, Sam Pitroda. Fellows will also be eligible to apply for a Hatfield Scholars Summer Internship Grant to support them while working in a policy-related internship over the summer.

We are looking for students with experience or interest in working in a government regulatory agency, such as the FCC, and a plan to continue working public policy after graduation. To apply, indicate in your statement of purpose that you are applying for the Policy Leader Fellowship. Describe your past experience and future goals in public policy. Include at least one recommendation letter specifically for the Policy Leader Fellowship. Awards will be based on academic merit. Up to two awards will be offered each year.

Diversity Fellowship:

ITP seeks to strengthen its' student body by attracting top students with unique backgrounds or personal experiences. Diversity Fellows receive up to $10,000 in the amount of $2,500 per semester for 4 semesters. The award will be automatically renewed in subsequent semesters if all criteria are met. The fellow must take at least 9 credits each award semester and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5. Fellows must pass the ITP writing exam by the beginning of the second semester.

To apply, indicate in your statement of purpose that you are applying for the Diversity Fellowship. Awards are based on merit and financial need. Up to two awards will be offered each year.

Military Fellowship:

ITP seeks to provide strategic skills to current and former members of the US armed forces. Military Fellows receive 30% off of their tuition for up to four semesters. The award will be automatically renewed in subsequent semesters if all criteria are met. Fellows must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5. Fellows must pass the ITP writing exam by the beginning of the second semester.

To apply, you must be an active duty or honorably discharged member of the US armed forces. Indicate in your statement of purpose that you are applying for the Military Fellowship and provide evidence of your military status. Awards are based on academic merit and financial need. Up to six awards will be offered each year.

Application Deadline for Spring 2010 is November 1.

If you have already submitted your application and feel that you are eligible for any of these awards for the Spring semester, please send a new statement of purpose and supporting information to itp@colorado.edu before October 1, 2009.

If you are a currently enrolled student you are not eligible for a full fellowship. However, fractional fellowships may be awarded. If you started on or after January 2008 and feel that you are eligible for any of these Spring semester awards, please send a one page statement of purpose and supporting information to itp@colorado.edu before October 1, 2009.

ITP offers a number of scholarships for continuing students. These scholarships have been funded by individuals, industry and alumni, and are awarded on an annual basis based on an objective, competitive selection process. The scholarships and their sponsors are described below.
 

Opportunity Funds

ITP's so-called "opportunity scholarships" are somewhat hybrid in nature: while offering financial support, the students who receive them also have opportunities to collaborate with the scholarship's sponsors.

The Society of Telecommunications Consultants Graduate Fellowship

This scholarship offers $500 to an outstanding student interested in pursuing a career in independent telecommunications consulting. The Society of Telecommunications Consultants ("STC") offers semi-annual educational conferences and other networking opportunities. Several ITP alumni belong to STC, and the recipient is invited to join the Society's events, meet and collaborate with colleagues in the field. Preference is given to students who have an outstanding academic record and a demonstrated financial need. Applicants should provide a brief summary of their financial need along with the other application materials listed below.

Endowed Funds

Scholarships that are funded from an "endowed" fund are perpetual in nature. They have been established based on a fixed amount (called "principal") which cannot be spent. However, the interest that is generated from the principal is used to achieve the purpose of the scholarship. Although the interest may vary somewhat from year-to-year, the amounts listed below are approximations for money that is expected to be awarded.

The Accenture/Butterfield Fellowship

Many ITP graduates have held successful careers at Accenture, one of the largest global management consulting and technology services companies. This scholarship has been jointly endowed in the name of Brian Butterfield, an ITP alum. Brian was an employee of Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) until his untimely passing in 1998. Because of his love for ITP, the fund was established by Accenture employees to perpetually honor Brian. The Accenture/Butterfield Fellowship offers one $2,000 award.

James Claggett Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was founded by donations from ITP faculty to honor ITP graduate, James Claggett. Although James Claggett died at an early age, he was an outstanding student, and excellent scholar in the field of telecommunications and well-liked by his friends and colleagues. This scholarship is an ongoing tribute to the life accomplishments and aspirations of this young man who will remain an inspiration to all ITP students and alumni for years to come. The scholarship gives one student $1,000 per year.

William E Rapp Fellowship

This scholarship was founded in memory of Mr. William E. Rapp. In 1976, Dr. William E. Rapp and wife, Bobbie, founded Rapport Associates (subsequently renamed ConferTech International), which built upon Bill's pioneering efforts in telecommunications. Through the 1980's the Denver-based company continued to grow, becoming publicly traded on the NASDAQ, and at the time Bill retired as Chairman of the Board, was a nation-wide leader in teleconferencing equipment and services with more than 800 employees worldwide. First priority will be given to students with a desire to pursue a career in the delivery of educational programming through telecommunications. The Rapp Fellowship offers one scholarship per year of $1,000.

Tele-Communications Association Graduate Fellowship

This scholarship was founded by the Colorado chapter of the Tele-Communications Association in 1994. Preference is given to students who have an outstanding academic record and a demonstrated financial need. Applicants should provide a brief summary of their financial need along with the other application materials listed below. This fellowship provides one scholarship of $1,200.

Racal-Milgo Award of Excellence

This fund, established in 1989 by one of the historic leaders in telecommunications data the Racal Milgo Company (now NextiraOne) for the purpose of encouraging interest in the field of telecommunications. The award is intended to be granted to students entering into their second semester of ITP's master of science program. Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need and strong academic achievement. Special consideration is given to minority and female applicants and those students who have not previously received a scholarship from the University of Colorado. Applicants should provide a brief summary of their financial need along with the other application materials listed below. This award provides one scholarship of $2,000.

Esther Sparn Memorial Fellowship

For 22 years, the acquaintance nearly every new Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program student made at CU was Esther Sparn. She was, among other things, a student defender, chief recruiter, Director of Alumni relations, departmental mom, and the program's number one advocate. She cared very much about her students and went above and beyond the call of duty for them many times. Esther retired in March 1997 and the Esther Sparn Fellowship was created in July of 1999 in her honor. This endowment is a gift fund to benefit students enrolled in ITP, with preference going to outstanding, non-traditional female students. The scholarship offers one student $1,500.

How to Apply

Application period is currently closed, an announcement will be sent to students when it is time to apply. For the awards, interested students must meet the following criteria:

• Be a degree-seeking student (full-time, part-time or CAETE) in either the MS Telecommunications or in ME Telecommunications degrees at CU
• Be enrolled in a minimum of 3 TLEN credits during the semester in which the award will be given.
• Must have completed at least two courses at ITP
• Provide a one-page statement of purpose that describes your career interests and how ITP relates to it
• Provide a copy of your most recent resume (GPA must be stated in resume)
